How to write a reading plan
An autobiography reflects your past growth experiences, shaping your choice of this university and your future life. A study plan, on the other hand, outlines your plans and aspirations for your four years of university life. A good study plan must complement the structure of your autobiography, demonstrating to professors your career goals, time management skills, familiarity with the courses, and your strong interest and ability to learn in this field.
◎ What is a reading plan?
A study plan is essentially a plan for your university life, outlining your ideals and aspirations for the four years of university. The purpose of a study plan is to persuade professors to endorse your choices; therefore, the focus should be on emphasizing your strong interest in the field and your sufficient ability to learn. This is crucial in impressing the admissions committee and securing a favorable decision for you, so careful writing is essential. In the recommendation and selection process, professors will use the study plan to identify the following key characteristics and strengths of the applicant:
1. Personality traits.
2. Do they have a basic understanding of the university they have chosen?
3. Does the candidate possess the ability to plan their own learning?
4. Assess whether you genuinely want to study this major, or are simply taking the exam to get into university.
5. Compare your circumstances to those of others.
6. Does the candidate possess the qualities and expertise suitable for the department?
7. Does the candidate possess a concept of time management?
8. Is the direction of career planning clear?
9. Level of knowledge of professional knowledge and academic tendencies.
To write a good reading plan, students should first fully understand what they can do, what they are capable of doing, what they want to do, and what they should do. Therefore, it is essential to first consult the information compiled by the schools and departments they are applying to, analyze the conditions offered by the environment, and then, in conjunction with their own aptitudes, personal values and interests, as well as family expectations and societal needs, determine the feasible content of their reading plan. This approach best suits both the objective circumstances of the environment and their own subjective conditions. Regarding the aforementioned information on university departments, students can consult their counselors at the counseling office or search online for information on the websites of various universities.
In principle, a reading plan must achieve several objectives:
1. It allows others to see your special abilities and qualifications.
2. This will demonstrate your strengths and leave a lasting impression on others.
3. It can display that your plan is rich and comprehensive.
4. Have a full understanding and expectations of the major you have chosen.
5. Able to demonstrate a systematic and organized attitude in doing things.
6. Has opinions and unique perspectives on certain concepts.
7. Prove that you have the basic concept of “planning”.
8. The ability to contemplate the meaning and value of life, etc.
9. Be able to reasonably explain why you chose this department.
10. Able to express a social view of sacrifice and dedication.
11. A strong sense of participation in group activities, and preferably experience or understanding of leadership and management.
12. Has enthusiasm and responsibility for learning.
◎How to Write a Reading Plan
Before writing their reading plans, students must do their homework, using various methods and channels to gather relevant information about the department, including:
1. Understand the learning content of the target department (including required, elective, university-mandated, and department-mandated courses).
2. Understand the “departmental characteristics” and “research development direction” of the target department.
3. Consult with senior students who have been admitted to the department to understand the key points of the writing.
4. Visit the department’s BBS website and ask senior students for advice on learning resources.
5. Take time to read books or magazines related to the department to enrich your professional knowledge and understand the latest developments and research directions in the field.
After completing the data collection, the writing of the reading plan begins. In principle, the content and format of a reading plan vary from person to person, but it can generally be divided into the following headings:
1. Learning Plan in the Professional Field
The focus of this study plan is to explain your four-year university study plan. Here you must explain your existing abilities and knowledge, the level of improvement you expect to achieve in your professional field during your studies, your research topic and direction, and your phased course plan.
2. School and Departmental Resources
Understanding the resources of a department not only allows you to realize your learning potential but also lets professors know you’ve come prepared, not just hoping for a lucky break. Departmental resources you can typically utilize include: double degrees, minors, education programs, general education, faculty, and the university’s atmosphere. For example: Who are some of the university’s excellent professors? What are their specialties? What courses do they offer? What facilities are available for your use?
3. Interpersonal Communication and Personal Growth
University is not only a place to learn knowledge, but also bears the responsibility of cultivating a person’s attitude towards life and their sense of community. How do you hope to get along with your classmates? What goals do you hope to achieve through university life? How do you want to pursue the meaning of life? How should you work towards this goal?
4. Chinese Language Learning
Explain which opportunities and times you will take to participate in on-campus or off-campus Chinese language courses to enrich your Chinese language skills.
5. Leisure Life
Many universities have a considerable number of clubs and societies. Which clubs will you join, what activities will you participate in to relax, or what skills will you learn to achieve your goals of physical and mental well-being?
◎The writing format of a reading plan
1、Three-part structure
You can divide it into three stages: short-term, medium-term, and long-term. The short-term stage covers the period from admission to enrollment, the medium-term stage covers the period during university, and the long-term stage covers the period after graduation.
2、Grade-based
This means using grade level as the distinction between learning stages, and making comprehensive plans for learning the courses of each grade, which can also include plans for after graduation.
3、Categorical
You can also plan according to the scope of your studies. For example, if you want to improve your English, you can prepare to take Japanese as a minor, or you can choose to study education to prepare for your future teaching career.
◎Tips for Writing a “Reading Plan”
Students must first understand the courses offered by their chosen major, and then, based on their available time, interests, and abilities, write a “concrete and feasible” study plan. Avoid being overly ambitious or impractical, lest you be at a loss for words when asked about your study plan during the oral exam.

(III)Autobiography and Reading Plan
Personal statements and reading plans are tools used by university departments to understand applicants. They may be assessed separately or used as reference material in interviews. If assessed separately, the criteria might include the clarity of content structure, the completeness of organization, the applicant’s self-understanding, a concise analysis of their strengths and weaknesses, the suitability and rationality of their career plan, the fluency of writing, and the neatness of handwriting. If used solely as interview material, the focus is on the connection between the applicant’s past development and future career plans, providing clues for the interviewers’ questions, and preparing further explanations.
The writing of an autobiography and a reading plan differs in focus. An autobiography emphasizes descriptions of past people, events, and things; facts must be clearly stated, and analysis should be concise and to the point. A reading plan is a plan for the four years of university and the future; the plan must be detailed and feasible, explaining the coordination of subjective and objective conditions, and clearly presenting the vision and goals. The following is a reference.
1.Autobiography

Since everyone’s personal characteristics are different, the focus of writing an autobiography should be on the admission goals of the school or department you are applying to. The titles of each section should ideally be carefully crafted to highlight the key points. The following are some basic elements that an autobiography should include:
(I)Personal information:
This includes personal information such as name, date of birth, education, and background, as well as personal traits, personality, interests, and expertise. It’s best to provide concrete examples, such as awards or honors received, personal interests and expertise, and even participation in social activities that showcase your characteristics—anything that demonstrates your unique personality and expertise. Be sure to keep the theme clear and focus on one or two key traits.
(II)Family background:
You can briefly describe your family situation, members, and noteworthy events from your upbringing; there’s no need to go into too much detail. Since family has a significant impact on a person, it’s best to focus on the positive influences on your studies and personality.
(III)Education process and experience:
In terms of the academic process, you can organize your grades a bit, highlight the good ones, and demonstrate your learning ability.
In terms of personal experience, this includes experience as an officer and in community activities. If you have any work experience, you can also describe it. The focus will be on the intellectual growth and insights that each experience has brought you.

3. What are some recent hot topics worth discussing in depth, so as to formulate a learning plan that suits you?
(III)Future plans:
The main focus is on assessing your ability to achieve your study plan and your aspirations for the future. Candidates can elaborate on their strengths, including their learning attitude, special talents, and language skills, giving the examiners a general understanding of their abilities.
(IV)Self-assessment
To illustrate your abilities, consider compiling some complete, representative, and in-depth works into a separate reference document.
(V)Precautions
1. The content must be appropriate to your abilities.
2. The content must be specific and feasible.
3. It is a dream that can be realized in the future.
4. Before making any study plans, please be sure to carefully read the admission guidelines for recommendation or application and strictly abide by the written regulations.
III、Club participation:
You can systematically organize your experience as an officer and your participation in club activities, as well as photos of your performance in the group. Through your experience as an officer and in club activities, you can demonstrate your abilities in communication, leadership, and teamwork.
IV、Competition Results:
Whether it’s a certificate of merit from a competition or a photo of you receiving an award, as long as it showcases your excellence and uniqueness, all the evidence or materials can be used as part of the review materials. In addition to highlighting yourself, it is also a form of self-recommendation and allows the review committee to understand your development in various aspects.
V、School transcript:
It primarily serves as one of the criteria schools use to evaluate your performance at school.
VI、Supporting documents for eligibility requirements:
The application certificate is the basis for the school to review your eligibility for selection, so it must not be omitted. In addition, any supporting documents for the eligibility requirements specified in the admission brochure must be attached to avoid affecting the selection results due to incomplete information.
VII、Other materials that may be helpful for the review:

If possible, ask relatives, friends, teachers, and classmates for help to practice the oral exam several times, or practice in front of a mirror, or record audio or video to see your own language and body language directly.
(II)Contact alumni of the department
Try to contact senior students in that department, even if they are from different departments within the same school. On the one hand, you can ask them for information about accommodation or food; on the other hand, you can ask them to take you on a tour of the campus beforehand to familiarize you with university life. You can also ask them to conduct mock interviews for you, or ask them about the latest developments in the department and the professors’ preferences to make you feel more at ease.
On the day of the oral exam: Pay attention to your attire and basic etiquette: Whether you think clothing is an extension of your inner self and emphasize personal style, or you don’t care about it and don’t need to worry about it, the basic principle is to be neat and presentable. There is no need to hire a stylist or buy new clothes for the oral exam, that would be too expensive, but you should be neat and presentable, which is basic etiquette.

Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 01》 Surviving the Financial Crisis, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology Has a Bright Future
February 21, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Chang Chin-hung / Special Report]
In just over a week, applications for the University Star Project, university and four-year technical college programs will begin. With more than 2,000 schools and departments offering admissions, which departments should students apply to and how should they choose?
Starting today, the education section will launch a series of reports titled “Introduction to Schools and Departments for Entrance Examinations,” analyzing which majors are suitable for candidates, the characteristics of the courses, and career paths, so that candidates can quickly get into the swing of things and have a better chance of success.
Despite being swept up by the financial crisis, with even high-tech companies laying off employees and implementing unpaid leave, NCTU President Wu Chung-yu said that once the economy recovers, the prospects for graduates in the electrical engineering and information technology fields remain bright, with more job opportunities than in other science and engineering departments.
However, freshmen should strengthen their practical skills, innovation, foreign language abilities, and interdisciplinary integration skills to be more competitive.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, among the top 10 majors in terms of the number of college students, three are electrical engineering, electronic engineering, and computer science, ranking 3rd, 5th, and 6th respectively. These three majors alone account for as many as 95,000 students, making them the most popular majors in the second category.
Wu Chung-yu, who once served as the dean of the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering, analyzed that electrical and computer engineering departments in Taiwan can be divided into three categories: electrical engineering, computer science, and bachelor’s degree programs without departmental divisions (established by 5 universities). They are usually collectively referred to as the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering. National Chiao Tung University has separate colleges of electrical engineering and computer science.
Besides the broader field of Electrical Engineering, the field can be further divided into four main categories: Electronic Engineering (primarily semiconductor courses), Communication Engineering, Automatic Control Engineering (focusing on robot manufacturing), and Optoelectronics (developing lighting technologies such as panels and LEDs).
Information-related fields are mainly offered by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, with more than 40 related departments; some departments of Information Management are divided into two groups for admission: Social Sciences and Natural Sciences, and some are also affiliated with the College of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The electrical and computer science departments of different universities have their own characteristics. For example, National Taiwan University (NTU) emphasizes general education and only divides its departments into two: Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The graduate programs are further subdivided into different institutes such as Optoelectronics and Telecommunications. NTU’s Electrical Engineering Department is divided into 10 groups, including Communications, Control, Computer Science, Optoelectronics, and Biomedical Engineering. Students are required to take the core courses in each group and also have to take compulsory laboratory courses.
The Department of Electrical Engineering at National Tsing Hua University is similar to that at National Taiwan University, also divided into 7 fields. Senior students are required to participate in practical projects. Its biggest feature is that 15 required professional courses, totaling 47 credits, are taught entirely in English, emphasizing internationalization.
Wu Chung-yu said that the highest admission score at National Chiao Tung University is for the Bachelor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science program. Students do not choose a major for the first two years, and can freely choose their major after the third year. In the fourth year, students receive a stipend to study at prestigious European and American universities such as the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Carnegie Mellon University, KU Leuven, Technical University of Munich, and the Technical University of Denmark for six months to a year.
Yang Chen-hua, Vice Provost and Professor of the Department of Computer Science at National Central University, analyzed that electrical engineering is more hardware-oriented, while computer science is more software-oriented. For example, electrical engineering students learn how to make ICs, while computer science students learn how to program driver ICs. The application scope covers fields such as animation and games, business management, and biomedicine. Many technologies come from mathematical principles. Students who are good at mathematics are very suitable for studying computer science, and their future prospects are broader than those of electrical engineering students.
Wu Chung-yu and Yang Chen-hua both emphasized that for those studying electrical engineering and computer science, clear logic and creativity are basic requirements. Future studies will place greater emphasis on interdisciplinary integration, teamwork, communication and coordination, and practical skills. For example, combining electrical engineering with biomedicine, energy, and nanotechnology would be very promising. English proficiency is also crucial, especially listening and reading skills. Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 02》 Mastering Asset Management: No Need to Fail in Specialization, No Future
February 22, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Chang Chin-hung / Special Report]
Accounting is a relatively stable career path, as companies always need related personnel. Although you’re constantly dealing with numbers, you’ll generally only study up to calculus, statistics, and economics. Business administration is the most popular field among Chinese university students and is also a top choice for the first group. Those with strong logical thinking skills, creativity, and an outgoing personality are well-suited for business administration; however, those with poor math skills are not suitable for finance, statistics, or economics. Those with strong information skills can study asset management; and those with strong English skills can choose the English major for state-owned enterprises.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education, among the top 10 majors in terms of the number of university students, Asset Management, Business Administration, Finance, and Accounting rank 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 8th respectively. These four majors alone have as many as 160,000 students. The relevant majors have a large number of enrollment quotas, and majors such as Asset Management, Finance, Economics, and Statistics require strong mathematical and logical thinking skills. Natural science students who are interested in these majors are also suitable to apply.
Lee Cheng, vice president of National Central University and former dean of the College of Management, pointed out that business management schools abroad are mostly located in graduate programs, while in Taiwan they start from the undergraduate level. If students are really interested, he would suggest that they study economics and accounting, the two most basic majors. However, economics courses often use quantitative formulas, so students with poor math skills will not do well. Moreover, after graduating from university, students can pursue other business management graduate programs, which will broaden their career prospects.
It won’t require too much advanced mathematics; however, finance majors, which emphasize quantitative analysis, need to be strong in mathematics; as for statistics majors, they learn how to use statistical tools to help businesses and even science solve problems, offering diverse career paths, but requiring stronger mathematical and logical reasoning skills.
Management majors such as Business Administration, State-Owned Enterprise Management, Business Administration, and Marketing Management require even less math. Chen Hongji, Vice Dean of the College of Management and Professor of the Department of Business Administration at National Taiwan University, pointed out that to study management, one must enjoy interacting with people and care about others. Outgoing and pragmatic individuals are suitable for studying management, but strong logical thinking skills are essential to see the big picture and long-term impact of problems.
Li Cheng and Chen Hongji both emphasized that in the era of globalization, being proficient in English is a basic requirement for business management departments. Students need to be more creative and better able to market themselves in order to seize business opportunities. Yuan Ze University and Feng Chia University have special English programs for state-owned enterprises, with all professional courses taught in English. Feng Chia University even requires students to study abroad for one year to earn credits during their special program.
As for the Department of Information Management, which has the largest number of students, universities such as Chung Hsing University, National Chengchi University, and National Sun Yat-sen University all offer admissions in both natural sciences and social sciences. Professor Yang Chien-min of the Department of Information Management at National Chengchi University analyzed that the major focuses on how to apply information or communication technologies to all management fields such as human resources, marketing, accounting, and finance. Besides programming skills, students also need to understand business management knowledge. As long as one masters both, every department needs information management talent, so there’s no fear of being unemployed. (Series 2)
Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 03》 Law offers broad career prospects; strong language skills are essential.
February 23, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Hsueh Ho-yu / Special Report]
Is studying law just about becoming a judge or lawyer? That idea is outdated. Currently, the pass rate for judges in Taiwan is only about 3%, and for lawyers, it’s only 8%, deterring many aspiring law students. However, Huang Chun-chieh, principal of Hsing Kuo Management College, says that students majoring in financial law can take exams for entry-level positions like bookkeeper or land administrator, work as clerks, and even challenge themselves for mid- to high-level positions such as court clerk or prosecutor. Their career paths are very broad.
Currently, in addition to law departments, financial law departments, and tax law departments in universities, Chen Hui-hsin, dean of the College of Law at National Chengchi University, said that at the graduate level, it is further subdivided into technology law, education law, government law, and marine law. Many companies need professional legal personnel and talents who can apply legal knowledge to management. “The annual salary may be higher than that of judges.”
Pan Wei-da, Dean of Soochow University Law School, analyzed that the Examination Yuan plans to change the way the bar exam is conducted in 2011, and the future admission rate is expected to increase to more than 13%. Students who are interested in studying law do not need to be scared off by the low admission rate of the bar exam.
Regarding the differences between the Department of Finance and Law and the Department of Law, Pan Weida said that about 80% of the subjects taught are the same, with the only difference being in the elective courses, where students can choose more finance-related courses.
Hsing Kuo University became the first university in the country to establish a College of Finance and Law this year. President Huang Chun-chieh emphasized that the university adopts a “certification-based” legal education approach and is very confident in the students’ future career prospects. He said that as long as students majoring in finance and taxation law work hard after enrollment, they can pass the land administration exam in their second year, “thus improving their family’s financial situation.” Huang Chun-chieh, who himself comes from a poor family and passed the general exam for electrical engineering on his fourth year of college, said.
Huang Chun-chieh said that bookkeepers are also known as “junior accountants” and land administrators are also known as “junior lawyers.” If one works as a clerk in the countryside, their income may be higher than that of a lawyer, making it a good first goal for students planning their future careers. He also analyzed that there are 20-30% more foreclosed houses this year than in the same period last year. Whether it is buying or selling a house or transferring land, clerks are needed, so the “business opportunity” is very promising.
As for what kind of students are suitable to study law, both Pan Weida and Chen Huixin mentioned that those with a sense of justice and a willingness to actively care about society are the most suitable legal professionals. “Only those who want to make the unreasonable reasonable and have a sense of mission can study law well,” Pan Weida said.
Many people think that lawyers must have a good memory and be able to memorize a lot of legal provisions. Pan Weida said that this is a “misunderstanding” because many law-related exams will give candidates legal provisions, and the most important thing is to be able to apply the law effectively.
Pan Weida advises students to demonstrate their reasons for studying law, their ambitions, and their career plans during the selection interview. “Don’t just say you’re interested in law; you need to understand why.” Law school requires strong language and written expression; poor Chinese is unacceptable, but oral communication skills can be improved after enrollment. Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 04》 Perseverance, Determination, Interest… Studying Medicine Should Not Be a Hasty Choice
February 24, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Tang Ya-wen / Special Report]
Affected by the financial crisis, the domestic electronics industry is in dire straits, and many science and engineering students are considering abandoning electronics-related majors and switching to medicine. However, Yang Pan-chih, Dean of the College of Medicine at National Taiwan University, warns that economic cycles are continuous, and the high-tech industry should recover in a few years. He believes that if students don’t have a genuine interest, rushing into medical school now will definitely lead to future regrets.
Medical Sciences are divided into four major categories
Domestic medical and pharmaceutical disciplines can be broadly divided into several categories, including medicine, pharmacy, public health, and dentistry. In recent years, with the development of the biotechnology industry, many university departments of biology, zoology, and botany have transformed into life science departments, but they are not affiliated with medical schools. Instead, they have established independent schools of life sciences, focusing on cutting-edge research in areas such as genes and neuroscience.
Medical school takes seven years, and graduation guarantees a coveted doctor’s job, but the hard work behind the scenes cannot be ignored. Yang Pan-chih points out that completing medical school takes seven years, the academic process is arduous, and after graduation, there is still a period of specialized training. If one enters medical school with the mindset of making a lot of money, one must also recognize that the “investment” time is very long. Yangming University President Wu Yen-hua lamented that many students are influenced by their parents to reluctantly choose medical school, only to find that the studies are painful, ultimately leading to dropping out or changing majors, which is a loss.
Research and clinical practice should be taken into account.
Liu Deren, Dean of Student Affairs at Taipei Medical University, said that in the past, medical schools focused on clinical practice and emphasized saving lives. Now, medical schools are required to be able to “advance in research and retreat to clinical practice”, and must take into account the three major needs of teaching, research and clinical practice. In the future, they will place greater emphasis on interdisciplinary integration.
Wu Yanhua said that some students are suited for research, while others are suited for clinical medicine. Major medical schools are revising their course rules. For example, Yangming Medical College launched the “Physician-Scientist Program” three years ago. Students can pursue graduate studies or even go abroad to study for a doctorate before graduating. After completing their doctoral credits, they can complete their medical school courses and obtain both a physician’s degree and a doctoral degree.
She stated that the training process for doctors is long, and while the salary may be good, the working hours are long, and they need to be on call. The level of hardship is unimaginable to outsiders. If one lacks perseverance, determination, and interest, it is difficult to make a living in this profession. Especially now that civic consciousness is strong, doctors need to have compassion, humanistic care, and teamwork spirit. If you cannot cooperate with others, don’t even think about wearing a white coat.
Dentists are in high demand and will be even more popular in the future.
Dentistry, a field that has become increasingly popular in recent years, is expected to become even more sought-after in the future, according to Liu Deren and Wu Yanhua. This is mainly because dental implants and orthodontic treatments are often out-of-pocket expenses, leading to higher incomes for practicing dentists. Liu Deren also points out that some medical schools have recently established departments of oral hygiene, which, unlike dentistry, focus on assisting dentists in early-stage diagnosis and treatment, emphasizing practical experience.
Pharmacy majors have a wide range of career options.
With the implementation of the National Health Insurance, medicine and pharmacy have officially separated, making the role and responsibilities of pharmacists even more important. Liu Deren said that after graduating with a degree in pharmacy, one can participate in drug manufacturing, dispensing, sales, and management. Besides working in hospitals, one can also work in pharmaceutical factories, pharmaceutical trading companies, government agencies, or run their own pharmacies, offering more diverse career paths than a medical degree. Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 05》 Dedicate yourself to basic science: A good choice for science colleges
February 25, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Yang Zhengmin / Special Report]
Luo Qinghua, Dean of the College of Science at National Taiwan University, said that historically, every major economic depression has been followed by revolutionary breakthroughs in science and technology. Now is a good time to invest in basic science, and choosing the College of Science is the right time.
University science colleges are composed of departments in basic sciences such as mathematics, physics, and chemistry, but their composition varies slightly depending on their developmental focus. For example, National Taiwan University’s college of science also includes departments of psychology, atmospheric science, geology, and geography and environmental resources. Many other universities also have departments related to earth sciences, and National Central University has a separate College of Earth Sciences. Luo Qinghua said that these departments are also basic sciences; for example, atmospheric science is related to physics, and geology is related to chemistry.
Hu Chi-ju, Dean of the College of Science at National Central University, said that the College of Science at National Central University has a Department of Life Sciences, while National Tsing Hua University originally placed the Department of Life Sciences in the College of Science, which was also a basic science, and later became an independent College of Life Sciences.
Seeking truth with perseverance and never giving up easily: What qualities should a science student possess? Luo Qinghua says that studying basic science involves researching “fundamental questions that humanity hasn’t yet considered.” Students don’t need special training or expertise; a decent high school education is sufficient. Besides interest, “a persistent spirit is even more important; one must not give up when faced with difficulties.”
Hu Jiru emphasized that students in the science department should have a spirit of “seeking truth.” He said that the difference between engineers and scientists is that engineers cannot allow bridges and houses to collapse, and their finished products cannot be allowed to fail; but scientists are allowed to fail in their experiments, and they must seek truth and facts from failure. When experimental results come out, they are either right or wrong, and there is no room for falsification.
Develop logical thinking and improve problem-solving skills
He suggested that students studying science should be talented, that is, consider whether they are suitable for it.
Some students are very interested in and can understand mathematics, chemistry, and physics, and can combine their ideals with reality; however, it would be a pity if they have other talents such as literature and art, but “take other people’s aspirations as their own” due to career prospects or other practical considerations.
Hu Jiru said that the College of Science trains students in analysis and logical reasoning. Graduates may not necessarily become scientists or professors, but the education cultivates different modes of thinking. For example, students trained in the College of Science can see four possibilities from a phenomenon, but they will not judge based on subjective consciousness; they will verify the facts objectively. “This kind of logical thinking can train problem-solving abilities.”
TSMC has many physics departments
The career paths for science students after graduation are “advanceable and defensive.”
Hu Jiru said that science students have a wide range of career options. Choosing electrical engineering might make it easier to find a job, but “you can switch if you study physics.” Many TSMC engineers are physics graduates.
Luo Qinghua also said that students graduating from the College of Science have a macro perspective, are not short-sighted, and will not be unable to find a job. Even those who graduate from the Department of Mathematics can develop in the field of statistics. The climate and energy problems that humanity will face in the future must be solved by basic science.
Taking solar energy as an example, how to store the most solar energy in a small space, and how to reduce carbon emissions and save energy are all very popular issues, and they all need to be addressed from the perspective of basic science.
Language skills: The more you learn, the less you’ll regret it.
Regardless of which department you choose in the College of Science, you must build a solid foundation and study diligently throughout your four years of university. Hu Jiru suggests that to increase competitiveness, you should strengthen your language skills. No matter what language you learn, the more languages you learn, the wider your career prospects will be. “You will never regret learning more languages; it will always give you an edge.” (Series 5)
Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 06》 Studying Engineering: No Genius Required
February 26, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Li Chengyu / Special Report]
When the economy is booming, engineering students have several job opportunities waiting for them right after graduation; now that the world is facing a financial crisis, many deans of engineering colleges believe that this is a good time to “return to fundamentals” and learn professional skills in engineering.
Your English can’t be too bad.
The College of Engineering includes departments such as Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, and Industrial Engineering. Common required courses for students entering the College of Engineering include Engineering Mathematics, Calculus, General Physics, General Chemistry, and Materials Science.
Language proficiency is also emphasized by all engineering colleges. Wu Wen-teng, Dean of the College of Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, said that in addition to the global competition that students will face when they enter the workplace in the future, their English cannot be too bad when they read original books during their studies.
Ho Chen-hung, Dean of the College of Engineering at National Tsing Hua University, believes that “you don’t need to be a genius to study engineering.” Any student who isn’t particularly averse to mathematics and physics can explore their interests in engineering. Chuang Jui-hsin, Dean of the College of Engineering at Yuan Ze University, emphasizes that students who enjoy hands-on work, taking apart machines, and observing natural phenomena are likely better suited for engineering, “because both manufacturing and research require hands-on experience.”
There is always a way out
According to Ho Chen-Hung’s analysis of the career paths of engineering students after graduation, about 65% of students will enter the industry, such as panels, semiconductors, and chemicals; 25% of graduates will work in engineering services, such as industrial product sales, maintenance, and intellectual property; and about 10% of graduates will enter schools or research institutions.
Fu Wu-hsiung, vice dean of the College of Engineering at National Chiao Tung University, believes that although the economic climate is sluggish, engineering students are not necessarily unable to find a way out, “it’s just that there are not as many job opportunities as before.”
Fu Wuxiong said that although the number of job opportunities may decrease from 10 to only 2, there is still a basic employment market in some basic industries, such as machinery, civil engineering, and chemical engineering. “Even if the economy is sluggish, the bridges that need to be built will still be built.”
Basic disciplines take root
Zhuang Ruixin observed that now that the high-tech industry has lost its incentive for high dividends, future graduates of engineering colleges may consider traditional industries. Taking the chemical industry as an example, there are some downstream industries related to daily necessities, such as shampoo and soap factories, which are less likely to experience large fluctuations due to the overall economic environment.
He also suggested that students interested in engineering should try to develop in traditional and basic disciplines, such as mechanical engineering, which is known as the “mother of industry,” as well as civil engineering and chemical engineering. Although these disciplines are not as popular as optoelectronics and are more difficult to study.
However, with the rapid pace of societal change in the future, students trained in these fundamental disciplines will have broader career options.
He Chenhong believes that in the face of the financial crisis, students should focus on learning basic professional skills in engineering schools. (Series Six)
Selection of Schools and Departments Introduction 07》 School of Foreign Languages: Interest is the most important factor in choosing a department.
February 27, 2009 [United Daily News / Reporter Hsueh Ho-yu / Special Report]
The College of Foreign Languages at National Chengchi University offers a wide variety of languages, including the most common English, Japanese, Korean, French, German, and Spanish. In addition, NCCU also has a Turkish and Arabic department, and Fu Jen Catholic University has an Italian department. How should students choose? Yu Naiming, Dean of the College of Foreign Languages at NCCU, suggests that students should prioritize their interests when choosing a major.
Students follow the trend
Huang Meng-lan, dean of the College of Foreign Languages at Fu Jen Catholic University, also said that interest is the most important thing. “When I learned French, I always thought that French pronunciation was beautiful and felt very romantic. At the same time, it symbolized taste and a love of freedom. After learning it, it really suited me quite well.” Huang Meng-lan laughed as she talked about her “love at first sight” with French back then.
Yu Naiming said that after the 9/11 attacks in the United States, many students became interested in learning Arabic, and the Korean wave of TV dramas led to an increase in the number of students learning Korean; students’ choice of language family was often related to the atmosphere at the time.
The way forward is not hard to find
But should students choose popular and widely used languages like English and Japanese, or go against the grain and choose less common “minor languages” to have a better chance of finding employment in the future? Hsieh Kuo-ping, Dean of Providence University, suggests that students should choose a language they truly like and are interested in. Otherwise, they won’t learn it well if they’re not interested, and if they don’t learn it well and master it, how can they expect to find employment with it as a specialty?
Xie Guoping said that, taking the most popular languages such as English and Japanese as examples, although many people know them, as long as students can truly learn them well, speak them better than others, and use more elegant and refined language than the average person, they can still find good jobs.
So what is the difference between a general foreign language department and an applied foreign language department? Xie Guoping said that a general foreign language department’s curriculum includes three main parts: first, basic language structure and grammar; second, teaching and application at the usage level, such as foreign languages used in industry, commerce, and tourism; and third, literature and art. Applied foreign language departments have more practical courses, but they still include literature.
Encourage double majors
To increase students’ future employment opportunities, foreign language colleges at various universities almost universally encourage students to develop a second major or minor. National Chengchi University’s College of Foreign Languages further encourages students to learn a second foreign language, such as Vietnamese or Thai, which have become popular due to the rise of ASEAN, thus developing a “dual foreign language, dual major” approach. Despite high market demand, due to limited faculty resources, there are currently no Vietnamese or Thai language departments in Taiwan.
Yu Naiming believes that students who perform well in English, Chinese, and history, have strong logical thinking skills, are outgoing, articulate, and confident are well-suited for the foreign language department. During document review and interviews, having special talents such as playing the piano, guitar, singing, participating in sports competitions, or having taken a second foreign language in high school will all be a plus.
Introduction to School and Department Selection 08》Design School Make Money in the Next Century
2009/02/27 [United Daily News/Reporter Chen Zhihua/Special Report]
The School of Design is a design school that emphasizes creativity and implementation. After graduation, you can become a designer, which has become a popular choice among universities and HKUST in recent years. The School of Design welcomes students who like to think independently and are interested in aesthetics and new things to travel around the world of design.
Chen Lingling, dean of the School of Design at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, said that in recent years, many universities and HKUST have opened design or creative schools. Related departments include architectural design, fashion, industrial design, commercial design, media communication or visual communication, etc. The School of Practical Design also includes Fashion Design.
Be familiar with surrounding knowledge
Chen Lingling said that industrial design focuses on products, while commercial design includes visuals, posters, advertising, packaging and animation. An Yuqian, dean of the School of Design at Shijian University, said that the media communication department of the school has two groups: digital 3D and digital game creativity.
An Yuqian said that about 40% of students who graduated from design-related majors will become designers, and others include artistic creation, show directors, etc.; Chen Lingling said that students who graduated from the engineering department may work in design companies or enter the design departments of large enterprises. Students from the commercial design department may work in advertising companies or the design departments of large enterprises. Some students from the architecture department may enter public institutions or become architects.
An Yuqian said that design has just started in Taiwan, especially some traditional industries have only begun to pay attention to it. Students who come to study now will be able to enter the design industry after graduation, create value and make money in the next century.
In terms of common courses in design schools, Chen Lingling said that they include aesthetic training and design principles. Design requires “making finished products.” It is also important to know the limitations of making finished products. It is necessary to study materials related to the major subjects. She gave an example. To build a house, you must know steel bars and cement. Those who study business design should also understand printing-related knowledge.
Communication replaces complaining
What kind of students are suitable for majoring in design? An Yuxi believes that it is suitable for people who think independently, have unique insights, and are interested in new things and playful. They should be dissatisfied with the status quo, but they should not complain all the time, but have positive suggestions.
She said that designers need to communicate with the design team, but also with the people who pay the money. They need to have good communication and expression skills. Since they need to read a lot of domestic and foreign materials, good Chinese and English will be helpful.
Chen Lingling said that those who study in a design school should have a good foundation in Chinese, English and mathematics. Those who are interested in art and can draw will have an easier time adapting. However, if you can’t draw, the school also has sketching classes in your freshman year.
Chen Lingling believes that those who are keen on products and like to observe others are suitable for learning design, because designing products requires observing the current situation and difficulties of users and making further improvements. However, due to the need for communication, those who only like to close the door and do experiments may not be suitable.
Capture tastes from all over the world
An Yuqian said that people who study design need to accumulate aesthetic experience in life, and it is best to also like to watch exhibitions. Chen Lingling encouraged students who are interested in design to read more books, and also go shopping and observe everywhere to understand the tastes of people in different regions.
Chen Lingling also said that in the past, some students would spend tens of thousands to remediate computer-aided design software before entering school. She did not think it was necessary because these technical schools would teach it. If they want to remediate, it is better to lay a good foundation in English first.
Introduction to School and Department Selection 09》Mass Communication, there are many ways out
Mass communication-related work gives people a bright and lively impression, and is also suitable for students with this characteristic. However, communication scholars remind that personality traits that value teamwork and high EQ are more in line with the needs of today’s communication media industry. The future after graduation is not limited to the communication industry. Working in communication-related jobs in enterprises and public departments is also a way of applying what you have learned.
High school students are very eager to
Although the outside world has mixed praise and criticism for journalists, graduates of the Department of Communication are also well aware of the dilemma between “theory” and “practice.” Therefore, even if the media environment is sluggish, the departments related to this field are still one of the most desirable departments for high school students. The mass communication cluster includes traditional departments such as mass communication, journalism, radio and television, advertising, film, information communication, communication management, public relations, oral communication, and graphic communication, as well as emerging departments such as multimedia and digital design.
Su Heng, director of the Department of Journalism at National Chengchi University, said that the School of Communication at National Chengchi University was the first to implement a “study program system” that separates freshmen and sophomores into different departments, allowing students to better understand their interests, study in a variety of ways, and cultivate “second expertise.” In their junior and senior years, they can further study in “professional fields.”
Qin Lili, director of the Department of Oral Communication at Shih Hsin University, also said that Shih Hsin College of Communication has 21 courses and provides a variety of options. For example, the first-year college requires “Communication Skills” and adopts a “teacher-free class” system, which allows you to come into contact with teachers in different communication fields and expand your horizons.
Observation needs to be keen
As for what kind of personality traits are suitable for students to study in the communication major? Hu Youwei, director of the Institute of Mass Communication at National Taiwan Normal University, said that people are curious and have keen observation and judgment of changes in the surrounding living environment.
Students who like to be in contact with people, pursue the root cause, and have a non-conformist personality are more suitable for the highly competitive media industry.
Hu Youwei said that the Department of Communication focuses on cultivating students’ judgment, training clear logic and oral expression skills, quick response and cultivating cutting-edge thinking, being able to seek innovation and change, and being highly adaptable and resistant to pressure. It also needs to cultivate the ability to solve problems and influence reforms.
High EQ is essential
Huang Wenshan, a lecturer at the Department of Communication Management at Shih Hsin University, said that in addition to organizational logic and stress resistance, “Team Work” teamwork skills and EQ are equally important.
Niu Zexun, associate professor of the Department of Advertising at the Chinese Culture University, said that the Department of Advertising and the Department of Mass Communication are both communication, but advertising can be imaginative, focusing on packaging and marketing effects. Many advertising departments also need to take the “art” subject, which is more suitable for students with creativity, design talent, and a foundation in aesthetics and art.
Cross-domain multi-charging
Su Heng pointed out that although the opportunities for print and radio and television media are not as good as before, with the development of science and technology, digital and online media-related jobs are becoming more and more prosperous. “Many students go abroad to work.” She emphasized that digital and multimedia journalism are the trend, and now everyone is strengthening their audio and video editing capabilities.
Qin Lili added, “Graduates from the Department of Journalism and Communication do not necessarily have to work in the media industry.” The Department of Communication provides students with cross-field subjects to choose from. After graduation, they can work in public relations, human resources, and media-related jobs in general companies and public departments. “As long as they are well prepared in school, they can apply what they have learned.”
Introduction to School and Department Selection 10》Strong language and good interaction. Come to the School of Education
2009/03/02 [United Daily News/Reporter Chen Zhihua/Special Report]
There are many homeless teachers, coupled with the declining birthrate, the future of becoming a teacher by studying at the College of Education is greatly affected. People in the education field point out that if you can look at the adult, elderly and lifelong learning markets and combine it with a second specialty, the career path of studying at the College of Education is definitely broader than imagined.
Yang Siwei, president of National Taichung University of Education, pointed out that the relevant departments of the School of Education include the Department of Education, Comparative Education, Educational Administration, Early Childhood Education or Special Education, etc. He said that educational administration is education plus administration, and the Special Education Department includes two areas: physically and mentally handicapped students and gifted students.
Zhan Zhiyu, dean of the School of Education at National Chengchi University, said that there are also divided by teaching subjects, including mathematics and science education, social education departments, etc. Some schools are divided by people’s learning stages, such as the Department of Early Childhood Education, and some are divided by subjects.
The basic subjects to be studied in the School of Education include pedagogy, introduction to education, educational psychology, educational philosophy, educational sociology, educational methodology, etc., as well as practical courses. Zhan Zhiyu said that educational psychology must learn how to teach in order to be effective and help students.
What kind of students are suitable for studying in the School of Education? Yang Siwei said that education is suitable for those who have longing and expectations for education, want to teach, and are interested in people-related matters. Since we want to teach creative people, creativity is very important, and it also requires thinking and judgment skills. Zhan Zhiyu said that people with good language skills and social interaction skills are easier to adapt to.
Zhan Zhiyu said that teaching requires speech, communication, and a basic interest in interacting with people. However, even if you have a shy personality, you can overcome it as long as you have motivation and determination.
Yang Siwei said that teachers are indispensable for their love and patience, especially special education teachers, who must be very patient; Zhan Zhiyu believes that teachers have a role model and need to be united in knowledge and action. Their morality will be examined by high standards, and they must pay attention to their character and be trustworthy.
After graduating from the College of Education, many people become teachers. Yang Siwei said that it cannot be denied that due to the declining birthrate, the future of teachers is affected. However, compared with junior high school and primary school teachers, there is still room for special education teachers, and those with good foreign language skills can even teach Chinese abroad.
Zhan Zhiyu said that if you can expand your horizons and see the adult and lifelong learning market, plan courses for adults and the elderly, and even develop mobile phone research and development groups with learning functions, people who study education should join.
Many graduates of colleges of education are taking the college entrance examination, and some are working in human resources training departments in the corporate world, or in the supplementary education industry, and running kindergartens and daycare classes. Zhan Zhiyu emphasized that one must learn a second specialty across fields. For example, if combined with communication, one can become a reporter; if one learns computer technology, one can enter the scientific and technological world.
Introduction to Selection of Schools and Departments 11》 Tourism Biotechnology is IN, Agricultural College has become popular
2009/03/03 [Lianhe Daily/Reporter Cheng Jiawen/Special Report]
Taiwan was an agricultural center during the Japanese colonial period, and agriculture was the field with the earliest development of higher education and the most complete departments. But by the 21st century, has agriculture become a sunset industry of “LKK”? Scholars don’t think so. Due to the popularity of biotechnology, green industry, and tourism agriculture, agricultural colleges have begun to turn over. Farming is not necessarily required to study agriculture. There are many opportunities. People who like nature will be at ease studying in agricultural colleges.
The agricultural colleges of each school are roughly divided into three categories of departments: plant cultivation and management, which includes the Department of Agronomy, which focuses on food crops; the Department of Horticulture, which focuses on horticultural crops; the Department of Forestry, and the Department of Water and Soil Conservation, which focuses on afforestation, development, and water conservation; and the Department of Phytopathology, which treats plant diseases (can be further divided into pathology and insects).
The other category is related to animal breeding and management: including animal husbandry departments that “raise animals” (many have been renamed animal science and technology departments); as for the veterinary department that “treats animals”, it is the most established and promising department in the College of Agriculture.
The third category is combined with other disciplines: including agricultural industry, agricultural machinery, agrochemicals (including soil fertilizers, as well as agricultural product processing, food technology), agricultural economics, agricultural extension, etc.
Agriculture often gives people a more traditional impression, and has been renamed in recent years. For example, the College of Agriculture at National Taiwan University was changed to the “College of Biological Resources and Agriculture”, and the National Chung Hsing College was changed to the “College of Agriculture and Natural Resources”. Agricultural engineering was renamed “Bio-Environmental System Engineering”, agricultural machinery was renamed “Bio-Industrial Mechanical and Electrical Engineering”, etc.
Is agriculture really a sunset industry of “LKK”? Hu Xinghua, deputy chairman of the Committee of Agriculture, disagrees. He believes that “agriculture” in a broad sense also includes biotechnology, food safety, ecology, soil and water conservation, climate warming, food crisis, energy and resource utilization. They are all issues of global concern in recent years. You don’t have to think that farming is required to study in agricultural college.
Hu Xinghua added that even if they really “farm”, there is still a lot of potential: because the older generation of farmers do not have enough knowledge about the latest market information and marketing, they often “know how to produce but not sell”, resulting in low income. Nowadays, many young people have devoted themselves to agriculture, moving towards precision agriculture, tourism agriculture, organic agriculture and other routes, and their income is even higher than that of office workers.
What kind of person is suitable for studying in agricultural college? Professor Lu Husheng of the Department of Agronomy at National Taiwan University pointed out that “interest” is of course the most basic. “For example, you must like nature and like to deal with animals and plants.” In addition, unlike medicine, which is considered a “money-counting” industry, the agriculture department is also very important whether students have a sense of mission to “do their part for the earth.” During the screening process, each school will use whether students are truly interested and have a sense of mission as their primary screening criteria.
Lu Husheng also pointed out that in the past, many students in the third category were not admitted to medical schools and had to “succumb” to agricultural colleges, and their parents often asked their children to change majors as soon as possible. However, in recent years, environmental issues have received attention from all walks of life and the rise of the biotechnology industry has led to a “revitalization” of agricultural colleges. Students and parents are more interested in and recognized the subject than in the past.
Introduction to School and Department Selection 12》School of Social Sciences Logical thinking is very important
2009/03/04 [United Daily News/Reporter Li Chengyu/Special Report]
The general environment is in recession, and the care and public service needs of many disadvantaged groups require more manpower investment. This is a good time for graduates of the Academy of Social Sciences to show their talents.
The Academy of Social Sciences has departments of politics, society, and economics. The Department of Politics can be divided into departments such as Public Administration and International Relations, while the Department of Social Sciences also branches out into the field of social work. Zhang Jiaming, director of the Sociology Department of Soochow University, said that as long as students care about social groups and are interested in social phenomena and social trends, they are very suitable to study in the Academy of Social Sciences. Gao Yongguang, dean of the Academy of Social Sciences at National Chengchi University, emphasized that “logical thinking is very important” for students studying in the Academy of Social Sciences, and they should have the ambition to “transform society into a healthier and more harmonious society.” He calls himself a “social engineer.”
Fu Hengde, director of the Department of Political Science at Tunghai University, pointed out that social science is “people-centered science” and students should be curious about human behavior and interested in public affairs. Gao Yongguang said that introverted students can study theory at the Academy of Social Sciences and become Nobel Prize-level academic masters, using theoretical models to save the world economy and solve human problems; extroverted students can serve the public in the public sector in the future.
In order to enable students of the Academy of Social Sciences to care more about the surrounding society, both the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Political Science will arrange service internships and internship courses.
Zhang Jiaming said that the service courses of the Soochow Department of Sociology will allow students to investigate and visit communities near the school, or provide academic tutoring for local students, so that students can develop a caring attitude towards society.
The Department of Political Science at Tunghai also offers a “Public Service Course” and a “Parliamentary Assistant Course”, which include government document processing, public relations, public opinion polling, and administrative law, and other majors that may be needed when entering the workplace in the future. Gao Yongguang said that many of the subjects in the college entrance examination, such as administration and finance, have been studied by graduates in school.
Zhang Jiaming emphasized that in addition to caring about society, students in the Academy of Social Sciences should also develop the ability to analyze and judge social issues and trends. After students enter the School of Social Sciences, they need to work harder on research methods and statistics.
Fu Hengde said that the departments of the Academy of Social Sciences do not have obvious corresponding occupations like the accounting department or the law department, and it seems that it is not easy to find a job. However, he emphasized that “a gentleman has no talent” and social science training allows students to have higher plasticity.
A high rate of graduates from the Academy of Social Sciences are employed in public offices, and some have also entered non-profit organizations; many of them serve as teachers in schools at all levels, including university-related institutions and middle school civics teachers.
There are also entry into the media, cultural industries, and industrial and commercial circles. Zhang Jiaming specifically pointed out that students from the Academy of Social Sciences have strong research methods, statistics, and investigation skills, and some graduates have performed well in polling companies; the market research agencies of advertising companies can also allow students to show their talents. The School of Social Sciences of National Chengchi University has research-related courses for students to take.
Both Fu Hengde and Zhang Jiaming said that the global economic downturn will have a relatively small impact on graduates of the Academy of Social Sciences; the demand for care for vulnerable groups and public services will increase, and these are all jobs related to the majors of graduates of the Academy of Social Sciences. Introduction to School and Department Selection 13》Faculty of Liberal Arts Strengthening Second Major Language
2009/03/05 [United Daily News/Reporter Tang Yawen/Special Report]
The economic climate is poor and jobs are hard to find, which affects candidates’ desire to study in a liberal arts college. However, with the recent craze for Chinese language abroad, many professors from liberal arts colleges say that as long as students have ideas, set goals, and develop a second language expertise, there are still many options.
Foreign language can’t be too bad
The liberal arts colleges of each school usually include Chinese, history, philosophy, Taiwanese language, and Chinese language-related departments. Ye Guoliang, dean of the Faculty of Liberal Arts of National Taiwan University, said that the Faculty of Liberal Arts of National Taiwan University has a total of eight departments, including Chinese, foreign languages, history, philosophy, humanities, graphics, Japanese, drama, etc., and they are very different from each other. But no matter what department you study, you must have interests and aptitudes. For example, the books you want to read in the Chinese department include everything from modern to classical, and you must read a lot of poetry and books.
What kind of person is best suited to study in a liberal arts college? Ye Guoliang said that students who have high self-expectations, have ideas and artistic flair, or are particularly interested and talented in Chinese and writing are very suitable. With the increasing globalization and international exchanges, Chinese students “cannot be too bad in foreign languages”, and it is the trend of the times to cultivate a second language expertise.
Employment is not a problem
Jian Jinsong, director of the Chinese Department of Sun Yat-sen University, analyzed that students in the Chinese Department are usually divided into two categories. One is literary talent, which is like inheritance, and the Chinese is very good; the other is students who are very interested in literature, but have no interest in mathematics and science, or students who have a sense of art and like ancient Chinese poetry are very suitable.
Students studying in the School of Liberal Arts often worry about “What will they do after graduation?” Ye Guoliang said that many students in the School of Liberal Arts will choose to further their studies or teach. Some will take the college entrance examination and become civil servants. There are also many graduates who work as writers, editors, reporters, screenwriters and other writing and publishing-related jobs.
Minor in Practical Studies
Jian Jinsong pointed out that as long as students in the School of Liberal Arts strengthen their second major language, employment will not be a problem. For example, he said that countries such as South Korea, Japan, and even Europe and the United States have all launched a “Chinese language craze”. As long as students in the Chinese department are good at foreign languages, whether it is Japanese, Korean, English, etc., they can go abroad to teach Chinese and expand the job market.
Chen Fengxiang, director of the Department of History at National Taiwan Normal University, said that history is an interdisciplinary subject, including ethnicity, politics, art, etc., and there are many official and private documents for research. As long as students develop practical expertise and minor in education, communication, and business management, they can become teachers, journalists, or even enter the emerging cultural and creative industries.
Jian Jinsong said that the selection examination for the School of Liberal Arts usually takes the scores of three subjects: Chinese, English, and history. During the interview, if the students can talk fluently with the professor and have a generous attitude, it will make people feel that their knowledge is broad and connotative. The review materials include works, certificates, etc., which will be more effective. (Series 13)
Selection And Admission Counseling-Career Development-Fever Topics
Normal students, who says you can only be a teacher?
In the early years, a large proportion of domestic normal college students had to enroll in publicly funded normal colleges because of poor family backgrounds. Many people’s mentality was: “As long as there is a way, we must change careers.” Due to the excellent quality of normal college students, whether they change to take the judicial officer examination, or re-enter the ordinary university, or even move to the business world (some local companies, such as Tainan Gang-affiliated companies, used to especially use teachers), they have performed well.
Compared with the past when normal college students desperately wanted to change their careers, today’s normal college students are afraid of changing careers because many of them originally chose normal colleges because they were afraid that the competition in the outside job market would be too fierce and they hoped to find a stable and secure job. Therefore, when the road to teaching fails and they must return to the competition for employment, normal students generally feel strongly unsuitable.
The road to teaching in the future will definitely be more bumpy. The collective closure of kindergartens and the massive reduction of classes in elementary schools caused by the “low birthrate” have mainly affected graduates of the normal college system. Since the normal college system mainly relies on middle school teachers, the impact has not been that big so far, but it is only a matter of time.
The proportion of national education in local government budgets has reached its limit. Expecting the government to further implement the small class system is like seeking fish out of wood. The issue of retirement of older teachers has been gradually resolved in recent years. It may take many years to wait for the next wave of retirements to clear up vacancies.
Everything is inferior, only teaching is superior?
In the face of the mass protests by homeless teachers, the government’s defense is: Just as you don’t have to be a lawyer to study law, you don’t have to be a teacher to study education. If you study education, you must be guaranteed to be a teacher, then do students from other unpopular subjects also have the right to demand guaranteed employment?
This statement is only half true. Does the government provide conditions for normal school students to change careers? It’s obviously not enough.
The normal university system is pretty good. In recent years, new departments without teacher training functions have been added, ranging from management and accounting to electrical engineering and optoelectronics. This has also given normal students who want to change careers the opportunity to develop other specialties at school. Chiayi Normal University and Chiayi Institute of Technology merged and restructured into Chiayi University, and Taitung Normal University was upgraded to the comprehensive Taitung University. The diversification of departments has also given normal school students more career choices.
However, most other normal schools are not so lucky. The departments and courses are almost exclusively devoted to cultivating quasi-teachers. Even if students want to study other specialties, there are no courses to choose from. The government’s top priority is to speed up the merger of normal colleges and surrounding schools so that students from normal colleges can be directed to non-teaching positions.
In any case, whether you like it or reject it, “changing careers” is a fate that 99% of normal school students must face. In fact, changing careers is not that scary. Huang Huizhu, general manager of IBM’s business group, graduated from the Department of Mathematics of the National Normal University. After working as a junior high school mathematics teacher for several years, he decided to switch to the computer industry and now controls half of IBM’s performance in Taiwan. It is common for students who are not majoring in education to find another job after graduation without using their studies. It is not surprising at all. If normal school students can put aside the mentality of “everything is inferior, only teaching is good” and “clinging to the iron job”, they will not feel despair about their future because it is difficult to find a teaching position.
Normal students have no reason to be pessimistic
From the perspective of workplace competitiveness, the normal education system is all public schools and the quality of students is in good order. There is really no reason to be pessimistic. Here are some suggestions for a way out:
1. In contrast to the continuous reduction of classes in primary and secondary schools, adult continuing education is growing rapidly. From internal employee training in companies, on-the-job master’s classes/credit classes offered by universities, to corporate management companies and certificate training institutions, there is a lot of demand for teachers and administrators. For example, the Department of Industrial Education used to specialize in training higher vocational teachers. Nowadays, the higher vocational education system has shrunk, but the corporate employee training market is very suitable for the Department of Industrial Education to enter.
2. Students in the Department of Social Education and the Department of Natural Education at the Teachers’ College can pursue careers in local tourism, in-depth travel, and museum management. With the booming domestic tourism and local festivals, tourism and leisure departments in various universities are strengthening education in local history, culture, and natural ecology; however, the Teachers’ College has a relative advantage in this area.
3. Physics and chemistry majors are in high demand in the domestic high-tech industry. Although the Department of Natural Education at the Teachers’ College also has physics and chemistry groups, too many of the credits are taken up by general education courses, education courses, and ordinary courses. Only one-third of the credits are truly specialized physics and chemistry courses. With some improvement, one can find employment in technology companies.
4. In other natural science education departments, mathematics departments can explore actuarial science, financial product design, production management, and information software industries, all of which require strong mathematical skills. Many large corporations have established “corporate universities,” systematically moving employee training courses online and utilizing e-learning platforms, making these ideal for information science education departments to showcase their talents.
Changing careers opens up new avenues for advancement.
5. Career prospects for graduates of educational psychology and counseling programs are promising, as the Department of Health is about to establish a “Suicide Prevention Center,” recruiting those with psychology backgrounds to serve as seed instructors in mental health centers across various counties and cities. Furthermore, to address employment issues, the Council of Labor Affairs is also preparing to introduce a certification system for career counselors, limiting eligibility to those with psychology and counseling backgrounds.
6. Students majoring in music, art, and English teaching in the teacher training system who want to engage in children’s arts education or start their own classes may want to look to emerging science parks, such as Neihu Science Park, Central Taiwan Science Park, and Southern Taiwan Science Park. These areas have a large number of high-income and highly educated residents, and are surrounded by emerging communities, making the market still largely untapped.
7.
The e-learning market for children’s tutoring has already flourished, encompassing online tutoring and online multimedia courses, with recruitment expanding rapidly.
Think you can only be a primary or secondary school teacher? Change careers, and your career path will broaden!
Popular workplace topics – Foreign Languages and Japanese Department
Becoming a global nomad is not a dream
Writing◎Li Peifen
Song Wenqi, known as the “godmother” of the domestic mutual fund industry, graduated from the English Department of Soochow University. With her excellent English skills, she thrived in foreign companies and performed better than those with business school backgrounds.
Chen Su-fang, former Marketing Planning Director of Farglory Group, majored in Japanese in her student days, but worked her way up from magazine editor-in-chief to real estate marketing planning. “Many magazines in Taiwan are actually modeled after Japanese magazines,” Chen Su-fang said. It was her Japanese ability that allowed her to see the diversity of Japanese magazines, which led her to found “Residential Information” and then enter the real estate industry.
Some describe a class of 50 students in the Department of Foreign Languages as having 50 different job options; the diversity of career paths is unmatched by few other departments. Because Taiwan is a trading nation, from raw material procurement to global product marketing, most industries require personnel proficient in foreign languages to handle oral and written communication. Therefore, students in the Department of Foreign Languages not only thrive in multinational corporations, but also have a strong foundation in local companies with a global reach, which is akin to buying their first ticket to success.
Joining the International Nomadic
From transportation to hospitality, there is a demand for fluent foreign language personnel. Flight attendants not only require a high level of English proficiency, but with the opening of European routes, airlines are also specifically seeking flight attendants fluent in European languages (such as Italian). In the shipping industry, companies including MERSK, the world’s largest shipping group, and Evergreen Group have released a considerable number of job openings in recent years. While there are no specific academic background requirements, strong foreign language skills are essential.
Many foreign language graduates are unwilling to work in sales, but in fact, if they start as business assistants in foreign trade companies and gradually become familiar with the practical operation process, combined with their foreign language major, they will have the opportunity to go on to work in international marketing or procurement.
Even within the Spanish-speaking field, the presence of numerous large Taiwanese garment manufacturers with factories in Latin America, along with the significant proportion of internet communication equipment exports to the region, provides ample opportunities for Spanish language graduates. Furthermore, the large-scale recruitment efforts by European companies in Taiwan in recent years, such as luxury brands like Louis Vuitton from France, Infineon Semiconductor from Germany, and Fiat Motors from Italy, have created new job opportunities for those with European language skills.
Secretarial and teaching positions are typical career paths.
For the 6,300 foreign language graduates each year, a teaching career is the most traditional path. Although elementary and junior high school teacher recruitment exams are extremely competitive, schools in agricultural counties and cities particularly welcome prospective teachers with foreign language degrees who pursue further education credits. Similarly, if you want to become a children’s English language teacher, the competition is less intense in central and southern Taiwan or remote areas, and jobs are sometimes easier to find than in northern Taiwan.
Becoming a secretary is also a typical career path for foreign language majors. Many fresh graduates reject secretarial work, thinking it’s just menial tasks with little academic value. But don’t go into a treasure trove only to leave empty-handed.
Every boss has unique skills to become a boss. Secretaries not only have the opportunity to learn their boss’s business acumen and interpersonal skills from a close distance, but the people their boss associates with are usually extraordinary individuals. Secretaries are the job most likely to be appreciated by “important people”.
Ren Xingyi, a graduate of the Department of Foreign Languages at National Taiwan University and currently the Vice President of Operations for New York Life Asia, achieved great success after 19 years as a secretary, thanks to her thorough understanding of the company, by establishing a new business unit. If you can treat your secretary role with the same dedication as a “special assistant,” it can definitely be a great stepping stone.
Basic skills should be combined with professional skills
If one possesses strong interviewing and writing skills, there are countless examples of foreign language majors transitioning to journalism. Furthermore, the diplomatic entrance exam, the international news translation and editing exam, and the national exam for professional tour guides and leaders all offer language options such as English, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish. The tour guide and leader exam even includes a Korean language option.
Taiwanese technology products are marketed globally, and every tech company needs a “technical writer” to translate product manuals and instructions into foreign languages, from English and Japanese to various European languages. There is a huge demand for such talent. If you can improve your technical foreign language skills, you will definitely have no trouble finding a job.
It’s important to note that jobs that rely solely on foreign language skills are limited in number and often require a bit of luck. Foreign languages are just a foundational skill; they must be combined with other professional abilities to truly shine. Obtaining a business degree or enriching one’s knowledge in the business field will significantly enhance one’s competitiveness in the job market. Taiwan, from its technology sector to traditional industries, has a great need for international marketing and sales personnel. Those with fluent foreign language skills and business training are highly sought after by employers.
The optoelectronics industry has made Japanese language talents popular.
Besides English, Japanese speakers are even more sought after. A survey once indicated that 5% of job opportunities in Taiwan require fluency in Japanese, but only 1% of job seekers are proficient in it. For the 1,800 Japanese majors who graduate each year, there are plenty of job opportunities in both the technology and service industries, as long as they are willing to absorb industry knowledge.
In the LCD panel industry, Japanese companies are involved in every link, from upstream glass substrates to downstream panel manufacturing. Not only do major panel manufacturers rely on Japanese technology, but they also depend heavily on Japanese suppliers for components and equipment. A considerable number of Japanese technicians are stationed in panel factories, and Japanese optoelectronic component companies are setting up factories in Taiwan one after another. In the digital camera industry, there are no fewer than 10 Taiwanese manufacturers that produce for Japan.
For Japanese literature majors, working as a Japanese translator for on-site engineers is a relatively easy first step. However, it’s important to note that most translation work falls under the category of “contract translation,” and full-time employees usually also have to handle clerical and administrative tasks.
In addition, overseas business and procurement personnel of technology companies have to deal directly with Japanese customers, so the threshold for Japanese language proficiency is even higher. Passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test Level 1 is the minimum requirement, and sometimes it is also required to have experience studying or living in Japan.
Follow in Japan’s footsteps
In the service sector, Japanese cosmetics companies such as Kanebo, Shiseido, and Kose have a significant presence in Taiwan; furthermore, Taiwanese beauty trends largely follow those of Japan. Therefore, fluency in Japanese is highly valued in the cosmetics industry. Similarly, in the retail sector, major shareholders of Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Department Store, 7-Eleven, and FamilyMart are Japanese-owned, so Japanese proficiency is also a plus for applicants.
In the tourism industry, the number of Japanese tourists visiting Taiwan continues to grow, but the average age of Japanese-speaking tour guides and leaders in Taiwan is now over 50. They lack the physical strength to accompany tourists on scenic tours, highlighting the urgent need for generational change. Graduates of Japanese language and literature programs who pursue careers as tour guides and leaders will find numerous job opportunities and high salaries.
Hot topics in the workplace – International Trade Department
New professional certifications are emerging.
Writing◎Xie Qijun
In ancient times, Genghis Khan expanded the territory, and in modern times, Taiwanese businessmen venture overseas to build their business empires. Faced with the ever-changing “battlefield,” they often rely on the strategic planning of international trade professionals to seize opportunities and break through to victory.
Chiu Chih-sheng, head of the Department of International Business at National Chengchi University, said that compared to general business schools that mostly focus on the internal operations of enterprises and rarely involve the external or overall environment, the Department of International Business is “internal” and “external”. In addition to being able to analyze the external financial, industrial and legal environment, students also need to have management knowledge of enterprises, such as marketing management, corporate management and finance.
Because of its “generalist” training, International Trade Department students have a wide range of career paths. Chiu Chih-sheng used the department as an example: about 30% of the graduates each year go on to pursue graduate studies, while the other 70% enter the workforce, covering fields such as international marketing, planning, finance, and international legal counsel.
Modern enterprises emphasize globalization, and graduates of the International Trade Department possess marketing concepts and skills, general knowledge of international trade, and financial knowledge (such as exchange rate risk and exchange rate operations). They are naturally given the role of international marketing, responsible for integrating global resources and entering overseas markets.
Many international trade graduates also enter the banking industry. Chiu Chih-sheng stated that because international trade students have received training in international currency exchange, they are often recruited by bank foreign exchange departments, responsible for handling export bill discounting, import invoicing, and other related business. Working in foreign exchange requires caution and patience, and it’s best to obtain a basic foreign exchange personnel certification.
Having a prestigious university degree makes one particularly attractive to financial holding banks seeking to recruit reserve cadres.
Common career paths also include joining trading companies, where employees are responsible for tasks such as quoting prices, correspondence, bill discounting, acceptance, customs declaration, and shipping; or working as import/export managers in enterprises, especially as purchasing personnel or operations managers in the purchasing department.
However, to become an international purchasing agent, in addition to general knowledge of international trade, it’s best to understand cost analysis and purchasing skills, enabling one to grasp market price fluctuations and effectively reduce raw material costs. If one wants a stable government job, one can take the international trade personnel examinations, but Chiu Chih-sheng points out that the proportion of graduates choosing public service is relatively small.
Regardless of which path you choose, good English skills are a “basic requirement.” It’s also best to try to obtain certifications such as the Council of Labor Affairs’ “International Trade Business Technician Skills Examination,” which was introduced in the last two years, as well as the “International Trade Conference Examination” and “Trade Manager” certifications jointly organized by the three major export associations.
Hot topics in the workplace – Electrical Engineering Department
It’s hard to lose your job.
Writing◎Luo Meiying
The number of students in a department often reflects the job market. In 1992, the Department of Electrical Engineering had 22,687 graduates, ranking as the third largest department in the country; while the Institute of Electrical Engineering ranked as the largest research institute in the country, producing 4,337 master’s students and 1,300 doctoral students in 2004.
Having an electrical engineering background is practically a guarantee of employment; you can hold your own for a high price. Almost all “engineer” positions specifically require Double E (electrical and electronic engineering) talent.
From optoelectronics, electronics and electrical engineering, semiconductors, computers, and communications, to traditional manufacturing, machinery, construction, transportation, and medical equipment industries, everyone is scrambling for electrical engineering talent. Those graduating from prestigious university electrical engineering departments are in even higher demand.
Because the technology industry evolves rapidly and has a short life cycle, electrical engineering students should not only pay attention to current popular industries, but also keep abreast of financial news to understand potential new mainstream industries in the future, such as medical electronics, automotive electronics, security monitoring, green optoelectronics, and gaming machines.
Basically, while electrical engineering and computer science are similar fields, they don’t compete for jobs. Electrical engineering professionals tend to take the hardware route, such as engineers specializing in equipment, R&D, and electronic power supply design, while computer science professionals tend to focus on software design.
The optoelectronics industry and panel manufacturing are currently booming, attracting a large number of electrical engineering experts. However, an engineer from a major computer manufacturing company warns, “If an engineer changes careers, their work experience will be recalculated.” For example, an electrical engineering professional who switches from computer R&D to the optoelectronics industry will have their seniority reduced by at least half.
He advised newcomers to be cautious about taking their first step in their careers. Moving from downstream manufacturing to upstream R&D, specifically from process or equipment manufacturing to becoming a research and development engineer, will be very difficult.
Electrical engineering talent is highly sought after by high-tech companies, with master’s degree holders often considered more valuable than bachelor’s degree holders. A TSMC executive remarked, “I haven’t seen a bachelor’s degree holder in my department for a long time!”
A survey by the Council for Economic Planning and Development indicates that over the next six years, Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Communications Engineering will be the second most sought-after qualifications after Master’s degrees in Computer Science and Technology. Driven by the trend towards higher education, many Electrical Engineering graduates choose to pursue further studies in Electrical Engineering Research Institutes.
In addition, graduating from the Department of Electrical Engineering and then pursuing an MBA, Financial Management, or other business graduate programs is also a good cross-disciplinary professional combination.
In recent years, Taiwanese tech companies have frequently been involved in lawsuits with major international companies, leading the industry to place greater emphasis on the intellectual property rights of patents. A strong technical background is a significant advantage for electrical engineering graduates seeking positions as patent engineers or patent lawyers.
With the recovery of the domestic real estate market, construction and building companies are lamenting the scarcity of “mechanical and electrical engineers,” a position that naturally attracts electrical engineering students the most. No wonder some say it’s hard for electrical engineering graduates to lose their jobs!
Hot Topics in the Workplace – Department of Applied Mathematics
Digital experts are in high demand
Writing◎Li Cuiqing
In the College of Science, the Department of Mathematics and the Department of Applied Mathematics can be considered unpopular departments. In the past, many graduates either took extra education credits to become math teachers or taught junior high school math at cram schools after leaving school.
In fact, mathematics is the mother of science. Many industries have found that students majoring in mathematics and applied mathematics who have received rigorous training in mathematical and logical reasoning not only have clear thinking but are also more sensitive to numbers, making them very suitable for jobs that deal with numbers.
Life and property insurance companies are industries that open their doors wide to mathematics and applied mathematics students. Besides actuaries, many life insurance companies are recruiting actuarial planners and have indicated that mathematics graduates are welcome to apply. Fubon Life Insurance’s human resources department stated that the work of actuarial planners includes mathematical actuarial calculations, product design, and operational efficiency analysis; any rigorously trained mathematics graduate is well-suited for the role.
In addition, financial holding companies face the challenges of assessing the profit and loss of their subsidiaries and the credit risk of derivative products. If risk management is not implemented correctly, it can easily lead to errors in assessment methods and models. As a result, more and more students majoring in financial engineering and applied mathematics are joining the risk management departments of financial holding companies.
Besides financial holding companies and insurance companies, component engineers in the IC industry, whose main job is programming, need to have reasoning and analytical skills. In addition to a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, those who can also take IC manufacturing process courses have the opportunity to enter the technology industry as component engineers. For example, the component simulation department of Mosel Electronics’ production division has component engineers with a degree in mathematics.
In addition, applied mathematics departments in domestic universities can be broadly divided into three groups: computational and dynamic mathematics, financial engineering, and statistical information. Since IC chip design and network computing are closely related to computational and dynamic mathematics, applied mathematics students are well-suited to work as software, firmware, and system integration test engineers in the semiconductor industry. For example, many software engineers at companies like Linear Technology, Accton Technology, and Sunplus Technology are graduates of applied mathematics departments.
Since discrete mathematics is one of the most fundamental disciplines in computer science, the entry barrier for mathematics or applied mathematics students to study computer science is relatively low. Many graduates end up working in software or IC design.
In addition, the main work of quality assurance and reliability engineers is in quality system management, reliability test management and analysis, failure analysis and process problem analysis, so students majoring in mathematics and applied mathematics are especially welcome.
In the manufacturing departments of major technology companies, many people with mathematics backgrounds serve as “scheduling engineers” on the production line, responsible for order scheduling and reducing production line downtime. Because a grasp of statistics is required, at AU Optronics, in addition to industrial engineering backgrounds, the most important backgrounds for scheduling engineers are mathematics and statistics.

Student Learning Portfolio Assignment Guidelines
College Application Guidance - Choosing Which Pathway To Higher Education
Which pathway to higher education should I choose?
Faced with diverse university admission options, students often have a misconception: “The more pathways I choose, the more opportunities I have to get admitted.” However, the real key to standing out among these options lies in finding the right path for you, maximizing your potential, and achieving the most satisfying results. So, what kind of student is best suited to choose an admission pathway?
I、Am I suitable to participate in the “Individual Application” for admission selection?
What qualities or abilities should students suitable for admission through selection processes possess? Generally speaking, they should possess the following:
(I)Individuals with outstanding extracurricular activities: Positive and lively personality, excellent oral communication skills, rich relevant experience (such as participation in clubs), outstanding performance in related fields (such as various competitions inside and outside the school), etc., are more likely to be selected for the second stage of the designated project.
(II)For those who excel in certain subjects: If your performance in certain subjects is particularly outstanding, it means that your potential lies in these areas. You can choose to participate in the recommendation and selection process or apply to schools where the department particularly values those subjects, so as to effectively bring out your potential and make it easier for you to enter the department in the future.
(III)Those who already have a clear inclination or aspiration: such as students who have a clear interest or firm ambition, should prepare and strive with all their might to enter their ideal department.
(IV)Those who can withstand tests and failures: The entrance examination for admission involves a series of tests, from the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT) and preparation materials to the interview and essays. Each step requires careful preparation. Even if you find out you failed after the results are released, you still have to adjust your mindset and try again. Therefore, you need to be mentally and physically healthy to cope with such challenges.
(V)People who score better on subject ability tests than on regular mock exams: If your mock exam scores are not very good in class, but your subject ability test scores are exceptionally good, you can seize the opportunity to apply to schools and departments through the selection system.
Students participating in the entrance examination selection process must not only prepare diligently for the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT), but also for numerous additional selection-related items. This will not only consume a great deal of energy but may also waste valuable study time. Therefore, students should think carefully before participating in the entrance examination selection process. Avoid setting overly high expectations, as this may negatively impact preparation for the subsequent subject-specific examinations.
Students who are not suitable for the selection process:
(I)Those who rely on luck: If you’re just taking the exam casually and hoping for the best, you’ll never get into your dream school. The saying goes, “Success is for those who are prepared.” No matter what path you take, only by giving it your all can you possibly succeed.
(II)For those unsure of their direction and interests: Students admitted through the “school recommendation” channel are not allowed to change departments after admission; while for students admitted through the “application” channel, some departments allow transfers while others do not. Students must clarify the relevant regulations of each department before applying to avoid future problems. Furthermore, even if some departments allow transfers, the regulations vary from department to department. Some departments have very strict transfer requirements, making it extremely difficult for students who have chosen the wrong major. Therefore, careful consideration is essential before applying.
(III)People lacking emotional management skills: Students participating in the entrance examination process must undergo a series of tests, including the evaluation of their academic performance on the General Scholastic Ability Test (GSAT), the comparison of their application materials, and the elimination process in the second stage of the selection process. The testing period lasts from the GSAT in February to the release of results in May. Their emotions will inevitably fluctuate, even experiencing lows. Therefore, it is essential to prepare oneself beforehand and do one’s best to face each test, but it is also crucial not to set unrealistic expectations for oneself.
(IV)Those who lack time management skills: The preparation for university entrance exams is extensive, requiring students to juggle multiple tasks such as preparing application materials and interview responses. Therefore, learning how to manage time is crucial.
Students can assess their own situation and consult with teachers, relatives, friends, and senior students to comprehensively evaluate whether they are suitable for the selection process. If they feel that they are not suitable for the selection process, then it is also a good choice to spend their time and energy preparing for the designated subject exams.
II、How can one enroll in a four-year technical college with a two-year vocational college diploma?
Beyond regular universities, some students aspire to attend universities of science and technology. In fact, professors at these universities typically favor high school students with strong academic foundations, and outstanding graduates from these universities are highly sought-after freshmen in the job market. Therefore, if your goal is to attend a university of science and technology, you cannot afford to neglect your efforts. There are three main pathways to admission to a university of science and technology, as follows:
(I)Application for admission (using the General Scholastic Ability Test): All high school students can enter the University of Science and Technology through this channel. As long as students work hard on the General Scholastic Ability Test and then use their test scores to apply to the University of Science and Technology, this channel is usually the most advantageous for high school students because the General Scholastic Ability Test covers academic subjects that they are better at. Students should make the most of this opportunity.
(II)Registration and Allocation (Universal Entrance Examination): Every student from a comprehensive high school can take the Unified Entrance Examination and participate in the registration and allocation process for admission. However, it’s important to note that in the five subjects of the Unified Entrance Examination, Chinese, English, and Mathematics are each worth 100 points, but Professional Subject (I) and Professional Subject (II) are weighted at 2, so they are each worth 200 points. Many students from comprehensive high schools who choose academic programs have a misconception that they can boost their scores in Chinese, English, and Mathematics. However, in reality, the weighted scores in Professional Subjects are actually disadvantageous for students from comprehensive high schools. Therefore, if you plan to take the Unified Entrance Examination, you should not underestimate the Professional Subject exam and must choose the correct exam group based on your personal interests and abilities.
Finally, I would like to remind all students that no matter which admission channel you choose, you should not approach it with a “trial and error” or “take a chance” mentality. Choose the channel that is most beneficial to you, and then persevere to the end. A wonderful university journey is right in front of you.
Optional Application Guidance - Explanation Of Optional Application For Unified Test And Distribution
Unified test and exam distribution; Important notes on selecting and filling out college application forms.
I、 Thinking direction and factors to consider when choosing and filling out college applications
Even departments with the same name can have different course arrangements and future career paths due to factors such as faculty. Therefore, when choosing your university major, don’t just fill in your application based on last year’s ranking. You should first consider the following questions: What is your preferred field of study? What kind of job do you want to pursue after graduation? What do you want to learn during your four years of university? In which region do you want to study and live? What kind of classmates do you want to be with? (Each school has a different atmosphere.) What kind of person do you hope to become? Before making a decision, you should clearly understand your needs, abilities, and interests. Then, gather the information you need through counseling offices, vocational fairs, school websites, and tech news websites. Also, don’t forget to consult your parents, relatives, teachers, and senior students, or visit the campus in person to experience the atmosphere and learning environment as a basis for your school selection. Below are some factors to consider when choosing a school/department:
(I)The degree to which one’s abilities, aptitudes, interests, personality, and values align with what one learns in the school or department.
(II)Career paths and development in the field, such as employment opportunities and further education programs.
(III)Is the school public or private? Is it HKUST or a college?
(IV)School’s location and distance from home.
(V)School reputation, faculty, facilities, curriculum
(VI)Opinions from family, teachers, and classmates.
(VII)Whether it is possible to change majors, minor majors, or double majors, as well as the relevant quotas and procedures, etc.
(VIII)Tuition and fees, scholarships and grants.
(IX)Future career paths: less popular or more popular departments? Choosing a school and department? Ideal versus reality?
II、 Stop, look, and listen before the election
(I)Comparing different schools and gathering information is the most important thing.
Students can compare different schools and departments online, searching for information on their curriculum, faculty, future career paths, and unique features. If you want to learn more about the school’s or department’s atmosphere, you can visit the school’s or department’s BBS to see what topics are discussed and what important departmental events are talked about; this will give you a good idea of most of the information.
If you truly have a specific school or department you’re determined to attend, I suggest you call or visit the school in person to experience its location, academic atmosphere, facilities, and proximity to home. Experiencing the learning environment firsthand will give you a clearer understanding of the university and its departments. This will help you make more informed decisions when making career choices. After all, choosing what you love and loving what you choose is the key to a happy and fulfilling four years of university life. For guidance on researching different departments, please refer to the following aspects:
1. Search online for introductions to various four-year technical colleges and two-year vocational colleges, minimum admission scores, and other relevant information.
2. Each of the four-year technical colleges and two-year vocational colleges has its own unique characteristics, such as school spirit, geographical location, and living environment.
3. New departments and departments that have been added, reorganized, renamed, or restructured.
4. The regulations, conditions, and selection criteria for each department are outlined in the recommendation and selection guidelines.
5. The Joint Committee published a table of minimum admission scores and rankings for each group and department, as well as a table of cumulative admission numbers.
6. Enrollment quotas for each school department.
(II)Pay attention to the leaderboard and predict the landing point.
Besides researching the school, another important step is to review past rankings to understand the school and its departments’ reputation. Generally, scores from the last two years can be used as a predictor, but with many new or restructured schools and departments in recent years, this accuracy may be compromised. It’s generally recommended to follow the steps outlined in this article when filling out your application. When filling out your application, remember one thing: you can only apply to departments within the same category as the one you took in the unified entrance examination. For example, if you took the electronics category, you can apply to departments like Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, but not Mechanical Engineering, as that falls under the mechanical engineering category. There are no restrictions on whether your major should be the same as your vocational high school graduation major. Students applying to switch from electronics to electrical engineering can simultaneously fill in both categories on their application form. Admissions will be processed according to the order of these choices, preventing simultaneous admission to both categories, but the limit is still 50 choices. In short, listen more, read more, ask more questions, search for relevant information online, and use the resources around you to consult with teachers, counselors, relatives and friends. Analyze and consider your own needs, interests and the characteristics of the major in order to choose your ideal major.
III、 Principles and steps for selecting and filling out college application forms
(I)Steps and procedures for selecting and filling in college application preferences:
1. Estimate your “landing point range”.
2. Refer to the standards of each department in the admission brochure and delete the departments that you do not meet.
3. Schools and departments you don’t want to attend don’t need to be considered; you can delete them and keep only those that interest you.
4. Make good use of reference books and the websites provided in this handbook to check the enrollment quotas, requirements, and admission standards of various schools and departments. Narrow down and focus your choices by filtering out the choices based on your personal interests, career plans, the factors mentioned above, and your exam scores. Delete choices that you wouldn’t attend even if you got in, or choices that are too idealistic. Make sure you fill in at least 30 choices.
5. To avoid failing to get into a good university despite having high scores, you should fill out several application forms.
6. Discuss your choices with teachers and family, and then make minor adjustments to your choices to confirm the final order of your choices.
7. Select and fill in your college application online, upload it correctly, and print it out for future reference.
(II)Landing point analysis estimation
The number of students admitted each year, the number of departments, the number of applicants, the order of applicants’ choices, the number of repeat applicants, and the difficulty of the exam questions all change. Therefore, there is no consistent benchmark for reference, and it is impossible to make a so-called accurate “prediction of the final score.” The “Joint Registration and Distribution of Daytime Programs for Four-Year Technical Colleges and Two-Year Junior Colleges with Admission Numbers, Cumulative Numbers, and Admission Scores” provided on the website of the National Association for the Promotion of Admissions to Technical and Vocational Colleges can be used as a reference to estimate which schools you will fall into. However, in recent years, many schools have undergone restructuring, added new departments, etc., which has led to greater fluctuations in the rankings of mid-tier schools, resulting in a large discrepancy. Therefore, you should pay special attention when selecting and filling out your application.
